In the Library and Information Studies field, it is essential to participate in professional development as the face of libraries and information studies professions are constantly changing with the advancement of technology and an increasing amount of available knowledge. Without professional development, one is marooned on a deserted island with no hope of rescue. Professional development comes in multiple forms from watching a recorded webinar in the archives of professional organizations such as ALA or attending a conference like the Biannual NCLA Conference. Professional development can also be offered through consortia such as the Appalachian College Association offers a special grant for the attendance of professional development activities such as special training seminars, workshops, conferences or more. The key to the grant is after applying, it required to relay the information to the rest of the community in the form of a presentation at an ACA event or producing an online webinar. Efforts like these are in place to ensure that the LIS field remains up-to-date with skill sets and also expands on recent scholarship.
